The research on corruption phenomena is one of the main activities of Transparency International Indonesia since its establishment in 2000. The Indonesian Corruption Perception Index Survey (CPI) is one of the relied products of TI-Indonesia, and had twice been launched to this day. The survey whose purpose is to measure the corruption level based on perception in cities throughout Indonesia, is always referred to as one of reliable survey products to measure these phenomena.
Started at the end of 2007, TI-Indonesia conducted a new research using previously exploited approach. The survey of In-depth Analysis on Corruption Phenomena in 10 Cities in Indonesia is a qualitative survey that complements the Indonesian CPI by way of explaining the corruption phenomena much deeper and more comprehensive. This survey is done in 10 cities that were surveyed for CPI 2006. These cities are Tanah Datar, Cilegon, Wonosobo, Yogyakarta, Denpasar, Palangkaraya, Mataram, Maumere, Pare-Pare, and Gorontalo. The survey was conducted from November 2007 until February 2008. The report writing was conducted in February – October 2008.
By understanding much deeper of the corruption phenomena, analyzing the supporting factors as well as impeding them from happening, and analyzing the actors who play a role in these phenomena, TI-Indonesia hopes to be able to contribute to the people of Indonesia extensively, the government, and specifically to the Corruption Eradication Commission, in supporting its performance in eliminating corruption from this nation.
The survey that is part of TI-Indonesia’s activities titled Indonesia Corruption Perception Index 2008: In-depth Analysis and Corruption Perception Survey in key cities in Indonesia, could only be carried out thanks to the full support of the American community through the Millennium Challenge Corporation and USAID. Specifically, we thank Saiful Syahman and Endang Suyatin from the MCC Indonesia Control of Corruption Project for their support and assistance throughout this effort.
This report could not be produced without the relentless contribution from the TI-Indonesia’s Policy and Research team, Anung Karyadi, Frenky Simanjuntak, and Anita Rahman. Our big appreciation also goes to the field research team that conducted the survey as well as write very comprehensive field reports. They are:
