President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono invited dozens of anti-corruption activists from across the country to his office on Wednesday to allow civil society to present suggestions and provide input to the government.
The invitation was part of the President's efforts to enhance his administration given the public perception of his government's faltering anti-corruption measures.
Among the activists were representatives from Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), Transparency International Indonesia (TII), and the National Secretariat of the Forum for Budget Transparency (Seknas FITRA).
ICW coordinator Danang Widoyoko said he would tell the President about rampant bureaucratic corruption at local levels. "We will also present many hot issues such as the suspiciously large bank accounts belonging to police generals the investigation of which has been stalled for a long time," he said before the meeting.
Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Abraham Samad, PPATK chairman Muhammad Yusuf, National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo, and Attorney General Basrief Arief also attended the meeting.
In his introductory remarks prior to the closed-door meeting, the President told the activists that he was really concerned about the public's disappointment over rampant corruption.
"I observe the media and listen to all kinds of suggestions. I hope your input in this forum will be more effective," Yudhoyono said.
